No arguments from me about clam chowder, but the one time I went to NOLA I thought it was a hellhole.

If you haven’t, you must watch a street car named desire. It explains why Marlon Brando was such a Hollywood icon.

Yep. Amazing city for food and drink, but after about 3 days my liver grabs me by the hair  and drags me back to the airport. Ironically, there used to be a banner at the airport bragging that Oschner Clinic was number 1 in the US for liver transplants. Imagine that.

Most of NOLA is a hell-hole. I actively avoid it despite living just an hour away. Despite my best efforts, my wife does her best to drag the family down for a parade every year. The last time we went was such a fiasco that we may not go again this year. What has in the past been a family-friendly parade was invaded by drunk college students. I suspect most of them were tourists who didn’t know the difference, despite the plethora of families and ladders.

Good god. I went to new orleans recently and had a great time, but i’ve never seen a city with worse potholes.

I literally left thinking “okay. Now I get why people buy sporty SUVs”

You’d think a city that doesn’t see snow and ice would have nice roads but noooope they found a way to have worse roads than Boston

Ugh. I did New York City at Christmas time this year and everyone was friendly and behaved and never. Again. Ever.

Wait. Everyone was friendly and behaved? Was this just irony and I’m missing something? Or were you truly overwhelmed by the crowds?

I spent several months in NYC after tropical storm Sandy. It was crowded and dirty (first day there was garbage day), but for the most part, people left me alone. Once I learned the traffic patterns on the sidewalk, I was fine.

Mardi Gras is drunk people actively pushing their way past you to get closer to the parade. What really pissed me off was drunk people pushing their way past little kids.

The crowds were TOTALLY overwhelming and I, too, arrived on Garbage Night. Absolute pigsty. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to live there. But people were well behaved and friendly, to a person.

How you describe Mardi Gras is exactly as I would assume it to be. Actually, what you describe is worse than I’d taken the time to imagine. Personally? I wouldn’t even think  of taking kids to see Mardi Gras, but that would be my call for my family.

Mardi Gras is an interesting thing. There are some absolutely not-appropriate-for-kids parades that mostly run at night. However, there are a number of parades that start earlier in the day and have generally family-friendly themes. The easiest thing to do is avoid the areas where you know it’s going to be bad.

These are the guidelines we followed in years past to make it tolerable (since my wife insisted that we go). Over t he past few years, the dr unkards have been moving into the family-friendly areas. I guess the more party-centric areas are getting too crowded.

Really, I wouldn’t go if it weren’t for my wife. She is adamant about it and I don’t want her to take the kids without me there. Therefore, I have to go too.
